Our Exclusive Interview with POL Empty
PostSubject: Our Exclusive Interview with POL   Our Exclusive Interview with POL EmptyWed Jun 03, 2009 1:22 pm

Adam and Jeff of the Recap-Rock sensation "Previously on Lost" sat down to anwer our questions...

Q. How did you guys get together, and what were you doing before
Lost?...Can you give us a little bit of band history?

A. JEFF: Adam and I met in New York through some friends when I was
putting together a band to perform a space ballet I wrote called
Champollion. It was fun - 5 dancers from Mark Morris Group, video
projections and tons of fog. The theatrics and fog are all-out with
Lost band too, but with an island vibe instead of outer-space. Both of
us are equally into writing and recording. We have a great collection
of instruments and tape machines spread between our 2 Brooklyn
bungalows. This project has been great because with the challenge of
writing and recording each of these songs in 1 day we found tons of
new recording tricks and generally sharpened our powers. Over time
we've settled into a nice sound for the Lost music.

Q. Who would you say are each of your top 3 musical influences?

A. -ADAM: 1. Disney musicals, 2. The Flaming Lips, 3. Michael Giacchino
-JEFF: 4. Alvin and the Chipmonks, 5. Pink Floyd, 6. Cole Porter

Q. If each of you could bring one album to the island, what would it be?

A. JEFF: Yo La Tengo "I Can Hear The Heart..." or "Summer Sun" would be
awesome on the beach/jungle. OR Bob Marley ("Catch A Fire" or
“Exodus") BUT! if we brought our own album and played it for people on
the island, it'd would be like Neverending Story where Bastian
writes/reads himself into the book. They'd love to hear songs about
themselves.

Q. Do you consider yourself to be a part of a certain genre? explain.

A. ADAM: We have the distinct pleasure of being a genre. Though we
didn’t really consider it when we began, Previously On Lost was
quickly dubbed the first ever Recap Rock band, and since receiving the
title we have been wearing it proudly and shouting it from the
rooftops. We’ll be recappers ‘til the day we die.

Q. Finish the sentence: If our friends could see us now, they would……

A. JEFF: Replace "friends" with "enemies" and then they
would..........feel their hearts turning to the good side and give
back all the lunch money they ever stole from anyone.

Q. What do your families think about the band?

A. ADAM: They definitely love the band. My grandparents and parents
began following the show shortly after they found out about the band.
We’ve played shows in my hometown Boston (I’m from Newton, MA) and
Jeff’s hometown (DC) and the family representation has been strong at
both affairs. We have a running joke that any time we get some big
press, we hear about it first from my Mom.

Q. What 3 Words would you use to describe the band?

A. JEFF: 1. RE, 2. CAP, 3. ROCK

Q. How did you get into lost?

A. ADAM: Bad shrimp. This was while season 3 was on the air, my roommate
had been working his way through the first two seasons on DVD and Jeff
had been telling me about the show, so I was thinking about getting
into it. I ate some bad shrimp and was bedridden the next morning. So
I figured the best thing to do would be watch all of Season 1 in a
day, and then I was hooked.

Q. Being a forum centered around theories, we have to know, what are yours?

A. JEFF: Jacob is Aaron from the future who grows up and really wants to
go to college to study looming. But he can't do it cause it's a dead
practice (like handwriting with anyone born after 1990). He time
travels back hundreds of years to learn to make his own thread and
gets stuck there. All colleges in the US promptly discontinue their
time-travel exchange programs.

Q. Who is each of your favorite Characters, why?

A. ADAM: I can speak for the both of us when I say, Daniel Farraday. He’s
everything a gal could want. Flexible hair possibilities, incredible
intellect, knowledge of alternate realities, and is great with
rodents. A piano prodigy perished in the past. He’ll be back for sure.

Q. If you had to fill in for a Character, what role would best fit you? Why?

A. JEFF: Richard. He's always been there, but he's comfortably removed
from the actual danger in any situation. He gets to see everything,
and has no real enemies.

Q. Have you met any of the cast members?

A. ADAM: We’ve never met any of the cast members in person, not yet
anyway, but we’ve had some close encounters. Within the first two
weeks of our existence as a band, Public Radio International was
interviewing Michael Emerson (Ben) on their show Fair Game, and asked
us to call in and surprise Emerson during the interview. He got a kick
out of the band and had great things to say about our music. We also
know that the actor who played Boone has a POL T shirt.

Q. What is your favorite Lost Quote?

A. JEFF: The sound Phil make when he's impaled by a fast-flying metal
rod. <urrrogleh>

Q. What is your favorite episode, why?

A. ADAM: Season 4, Episode 3: The Economist. What’s better than seeing
Sayid travel the world, sleeping with beautiful women and murdering
evildoers on the golf course?

Q. Have any of you ever cried during an episode of Lost? Which one?

A. JEFF: Not during any scene with Jack in it. He does enough crying for
all of us. Charlie sacrificing himself and using magic marker on his
hand one last time was very sad. I cried mostly out of anger at the
world when Farraday died. He's the greatest.
ADAM: I came close to crying during the finale when Juliet fell down
the well. I grabbed the stranger next to me (at our Season 5 Lost
Finale party with over 400 people) and we held eachother until it was
all over.

Q. Is there an episode in particular that inspired you to recap it in a song?

A. ADAM: Every episode. There’s inspiration throughout the show. From the
get-go, we realized that Lost was absolutely loaded with content at
our disposal to evoke, dissect, and exploit in song form. Some
episodes are easier than other to recap, but at the end of the process
we’ve always felt confident that we wrote the song that was meant to
be written.

Q. If not, how did you come up with the idea?

A. JEFF: Yea, we started with Episode 1 of Season 4 and were committed to
doing the whole Season from the beginning. There are no episodes that
can't be "capped". But one of our Season 5 songs called "Hang In
There" was a last minute addition. We hadn't intended to write a song
that week, but the Episode had a power that was too hard to resist. We
ended up doing it anyway and the song is now one of our favorite to
perform live.

Q. What is your favorite Previously on Lost song?

A. ADAM: It’s like picking your favorite child. The youngest is always
your favorite. So, in our case, my favorite song is the one that we’ve
just finished, “License to Kill in Dharmaville,” which ABC will be
debuting on ABC.com on June 3rd. It recaps the season finale, and was
so fun to write.

Q. When and how did opportunity knock with ABC?

A. JEFF: We knew that some ABC and Bad Robot folks knew about the band
when they came to see us play in LA on the Season 4 Recap Revolution
Tour of 2008. We had some hilarious shows in LA and San Francisco. We
initially talked about putting some stuff about the band on the next
DVD release. That was flattering for sure. Then midway through Season
5, ABC emailed us about teaming up on something. We stared at each
other in silence for about 8 minutes and then did the most unplanned
and delayed high-five ever seen. We recorded that high-five, and every
time you hear a group clap sample in one of our songs, that's the
sound of 20 of that celebratory gesture put on top of each other.

Q. For those who may not know, what exactly will you be doing with the show?

A. ADAM: Well, ABC has a web series called Lost Untangled, which recaps
each episode humorously using action figures of all the characters.
It’s pretty hilarious. The folks behind Untangled are taking our
reacap for the Season 5 Finale, and making a music video for it using
action figures, and putting little bits of funny dialogue in between
the music. We haven’t seen it yet, but have been working with them for
a bit and know that they’re really funny people, and their ideas for
this video have been amazing, so we can’t wait to see it.

Q. Where will your fans get to see your work in the future?

A. JEFF: For Lost related stuff, we'll continue in some way for sure next
season. We'll be posting any new songs to our myspace page and iTunes.
Our goal is to score a Pixar/Disney sing-song style musical. Thomas
Newman (Wall-e) and Michael Giacchino are incredible and we hope to
one day team up with them. I just produced an album for a band called
Those Darlins that's coming out next month. Adam and I both
contributed as musicians.

Q. Are you being considered for the soundtrack for season 6?

A. ADAM: We would never attempt to replace or outdo sir Michael
Giacchino, the composer who pens all the music for Lost, as well as
Star Trek (did you SEE that???) and every other JJ masterwork. The
hope is that if this first Untangled musical goes well, and enough
people watch it and love it, that we’ll be hired on to do a song for
every episode next season.

Q. What will you guys do when Lost is over?

A. JEFF: We have a few projects in the works. A couple are secret at this
stage. We're working on a cover album of Disney and other children's
songs. I do the sound for Pitchfork TV and and have a studio in
Brooklyn called Treefort. Our band-mate, Juan and I have a show called
Juan's Basement where we record/interview bands at our house and we
hope to be pitching a few ideas around in the music-TV area. The bunch
of us are always scheming up new things. There's much to do.

Q. Any other contracts in the wings?

A. ADAM: A few prenups, and a 4 year deal with the Knicks, but we’re
keeping that all hush-hush for now.

Just for fun…

Q. Would you drink Rogers Beer?

A. -ADAM: I dunno....it makes him act all…crazy.
-JEFF: Yea, you pass out drunk and when you wake up your son is gone. No thanks.

Q. 3 Losties…Hook-up with one, BFF one, Kill one…GO!!!

A. -ADAM: Hook-up with Juliet. BFF with Walt. Kill Kate.
-JEFF: Hook up - put 'em up Adam! I'll fight you for her, BFF - Locke
(the non-possessed one), Kill Vincent (I could never catch a wild boar
and I'm hungry).

Q. Hurley, love him, hate him?

A. -ADAM: Love him. He means well. Plus, his dad is Cheech.
-JEFF: Love Hurley. Caring is cool, and he cares.

Q. Kate or Juliet?

A. -ADAM: Kate to be kept off screen for all of season 6. Juliet to be in
every scene of season 6.
-JEFF: Exactly. Kate goes to the far far far East. Juliet is the sun.

Q. Sawyer or Jack?

A. -ADAM: Sawyer to run for mayor of the island. Jack to run for president
of the Sawyer fan club.
-JEFF: And Farraday for President of Heaven.

Q. On the island, you would live it up in Dharmaville, The Caves, or the Beach?

A. -ADAM: I’d be more likely to loom in the statue.
-JEFF: I'd take permanent residence in Dharmaville, have a private
cabana on the beach, and build a flourishing casino resort at the
caves.

Q. What is one thing in your suitcase you would tackle Michael for?

A. -ADAM: A beach volleyball net.
-JEFF: Mops. I know he wants them but they're mine.

Q. And finally, What lies in the shadow of the statue?

A. -ADAM: Sand crabs.
-JEFF: Cool sand. The statue is really best used as a giant beach umbrella.
