The Urim and Thumim were two stones mentioned at various times in the Bible. The Latter Day Saints Church believes that it was likely that Adam and Eve were in possession of them and passed them down. The Urim and Thummim came into use when the fate of king and nation was concerned. The classical rabbinical writers argued that the Urim and Thummim were only permitted to be consulted by very prominent figures such as army generals, the most senior of court figures, and kings, and the only questions which could be raised were those which were asked for the benefit of the people as a whole.Urim and Thummim essentially means cursed or faultless, in reference to the deity's view of an accused - in other rules.words Urim and Thummim were used to answer the question innocent or guilty. The Bible describes an attempt to identify a sinner via divination, by repeatedly splitting the people into two groups and identifying which group contains the sinner/bad element(this explains some of the lists). The Urim and Thummim told you if they were guilty or not.
The Bible does describe them as being put into the priestly vestiments, inside the breastplate to be exact, which scholars think implies they were objects put into some sort of pouch within it, and then, while out of view, one was chosen by touch and withdrawn or thrown out; since the Urim and Thummim were put inside this pouch, they were presumably small and fairly flat, and were possibly tablets of wood or of bone.In the novel The Alchemist, by Paulo Coelho, the king of Salem gives the main character Santiago two stones that the king calls Urim and Thummim. One of the stones is white, which is said to signify no, and the other is black, said to signify yes; a significance applicable when the stones are asked an appropriate question and drawn from a bag. The king himself had removed the stones from his shining golden breastplate. The traditional rabbinical descriptions of the function of Urim and Thummim—transmitting messages by glowing—has been claimed by some proponents of paleocontact hypothesis to be evidence in support of that hypothesis...
Rose and Bernard were quite involved in Seasons 1,2, and 3.But since then they have taken a back seat. I think this is intentional so that we will forget them.It has already been mentioned on an earlier thread that Bernard and Rose were separated when the plan crashed, and Rose was yelling for Bernard.Everyone thought he would be dead but Rose always maintained conviction that Bernard was still alive-as if she knew(she looked towards heaven). Then on Jughead Bernard went looking for her.To me that was a clue from the producers, it was reminiscent of Rose looking for Bernard. As Elliott Maslow mentioned, Bernard, Rose and the rest of their group have been estranged from Sawyer, Faraday and Juliette, while Locke has joined the latter.
How the heck do R&B's group cope with anything? They are leaderless. So what will R&B do in 1954? Get caught of course. The only thing they really know is that all of a sudden Rose's cancer starts to return.Bernard is baffled, but Rose knows.Because they are in a time period on the Island where the bomb has not gone off yet, therefore no radiation-the radiation was the real cause of her cancer going into remission(radiation is used in chemotherapy, the island provided painless therapy). At the moment I am guessing that Richard has the two stones and he uses them to tell who is friend or foe.The 4 people Miles walked over who were dead obviously were meaning harm to the Island-they were looking to exploit it.Richard will use the stones and judge their group to be a threat as the dark stone will glow.Seeing that death was at their door, R&B try to escape and at least save the rest of the group by running to the only safe place they know-the caves.Jack told them in House of the Rising Sun that it was perfect to defend oneself in, plenty of water etc...By this time they finally understand what is happening to them and the future consequences. So Rose, seeing that she will die soon, steals the stones before escaping, takes them to the cave so that the Losties will pick them up in 2004 and dies in Bernard's arms as he weeps to his own death-never to leave Rose's side.
What if we saw their ghosts in the finale?
