i think the mystery guy is not working alone.
when hurley first finds the cabin he sees two people inside.
when locke comes to the cabin to find jacob, he finds two people inside.
two people are seeking the loophole to kill jacob.

MM tried to trick Ecko into confessing so he would not be killed by Smokie.
MM cannot take the from of anyone killed by Smokie ... MM would have gotten Ecko killed another way so he could take his form, but Ecko would not confess, so Smokie took him ... now Smokie has Ecko's special power and MM doesn't.

it took MM a long time to find a loop hole ... he tried several times throughout the show, but was only finally successful with Locke ... MM would have taken Sawyer's form, if Sawyer had killed the wild boar that one time [ he would have taken him later ]

but Jacob knew it all had to happen as it did.

we saw MM the first time having taken the form of someone who died in the crash .... he was the guy at the crash site that jack called to help get a guy out from under some wreckage ... later on that same guy is seen briefly in the cabin ... we used to assume it was Jacob ... but we have learned it is MM in one of his manifestations.

I do believe that when we see Walt in places he shouldn't be, that is really Walt [ though in his dreams he is there and in people's minds also ]

Christian is Christian .... just cuz the liar Ben says "dead is dead" and Richard says to too, doesn't mean it's true .... Charlie was dead once and got resuscitated by Jack ... Sawyer also and Desmond both were dead and got resuscitated by someone ... maybe more ... I forget ...

but Yemi was MM when he appeared to Ecko.

Jacob influences Vincent.

Hurley sees actual dead people but also hallucinates.

strong evidence in favor of the theory that the whole thing is a delusion by Libby in the mental institute [ Dave is Libby's dead husband ]

and teresa is boones old babysitter that falls up the stairs then down the stairs.
