Paul's Ankh in "LaFleur"

In "LaFleur", Amy reaches into her dead husband Paul's shirt and pulls an Ankh out from around his neck. Why was he wearing that? Are the Dharmas really from a time before the innitiative?

my theory for the Egyptian hieroglyphics are simply just symbols and signs. biohazard, skull and bones, peace, stars is a tough cookie symbol.

For example, If we were on a smoke island, no electricity. But O surely we miss out computer. Our shrines will be covered with pc symbols. We will call out apples, macs, on every windows, a microsoft, instead of x and o it will be <3. Smily faces will be no more . All these symbols have a deeper meaning, just like the names of our characters and the book that they carry on-screen.

Also, I feel that heiroglyphics is a old but stand to the test of time language. We could have used latin but that spoils the fun a bit too. But there has been some latin words in Lost though.
