The Kate Greenaway Medal was established in the United Kingdom in 1955 in honour of the children's illustrator, Kate Greenaway. The medal is given annually to an outstanding work of illustration in children's literature. It is awarded by Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals (CILIP).
The first award was made to Edward Ardizzone for Tim All Alone in 1956. The winner receives a golden medal and £500 worth of books to donate to a library of their choice. Since 2000, the recipient of the Kate Greenaway Medal has also been presented with the Colin Mears Award to the value of £5000. It is interesting to note that the award was not given in 1955 or 1958, since no book was considered suitable.
